In 2004, President George W. Bush set as a goal that every American would have an electronic health record by 2014. Within three years of that pronouncement, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) established the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), and the American Health Information Community (AHIC) to oversee policy. This was the environment in which the founder of Health-Chex, LLC became inspired to explore clinical informatics. As a nurse trained in Six Sigma, our founder was interested in exploring the data to wisdom continuum and how informatics was one bridge to data extraction, synthesis and analysis. She became fascinated by how the analysis and use of aggregate data could potentially impact standards of care to promote best practices and drive population health.
She went on to help train providers in the armed services on the first enterprise-wide Department of Defense Electronic Health Record (EHR). She quickly understood how working with data and technology has the potential to improve patient care. Later, in the role of Director of Quality and Clinical Informatics, she helped a multi-site system leverage data for clinical decision support with the populations it served.
